HOUSING OPTIONS IN KIRKWOOD VALLEY.

We have 163 beds available and during the winter season well over 800 employees. There are 3 types of employee housing at Kirkwood, with most if it being located in the Red Cliffs Housing building. There are also beds available in the Youth Hostel, which is not actually a Youth Hostel during the winter months. It is reserved for housing employees only. The third location, Renwick is usually occupied by seasonal - year round employees and it is very difficult to get an allocation there unless you are a Supervisor or Manager.

There is limited housing at the resort and the possibility of being allocated a housing bed, depends on which job you are offered. Each department manager is given a certain amount of beds in each housing location. It is entirely up to them who they allocate those beds to. Usually returning employees are given the option of taking a housing allocation first, followed by new employees. If you are interested in living in employee housing please check with the Manager who hires you about availability of a bed, but don’t count on it!

Red Cliffs Housing is considered Dorm style and consists of 4 “towers”, each tower has 3 levels. Each level has 4 bedrooms with attached bath and closet space. Each Level has a central kitchen and living area. The bedrooms and living spaces are not very large so please minimize the amount of personal belongings you bring with you. In each bedroom there is a bed and nightstand, you will need to supply your own bedding and towels as well as any personal items you need.

The kitchens are equipped with a microwave, conventional oven, stove top and at least one refrigerator. Some units have an extra fridge. You will have to share cupboard and fridge space with 7 other people so buy supplies accordingly. The units do have some cooking utensils, pots, pans, flatware and crockery however the condition and amount of these items is uncertain at any given time. Once you arrive you may wish to purchase some cheap items from Kmart in South Lake Tahoe, or Walmart in Carson City.

The Youth Hostel or the Hostel as it is referred to consists of two floors, each floor has a shared kitchen and living area. Each bedroom has one bed with a private bathroom. Again you must supply your own bedding, there are some kitchen items in the Hostel but they are not guaranteed. Renwick, for returning employees or those who hold a higher job title is a single or double occupancy unit. It is mostly unfurnished and has one or two bedrooms, a bathroom, small kitchen and living area.

Like any rental the employee housing units all cost money to live in. The cost of living in these units is relatively inexpensive and they do reflect that. All rent is automatically deducted from your paycheck and you are expected to work enough hours to cover your rent as well as leave money for personal expenses like food. If you are not working enough hours to pay rent, we expect you will pay the balance at the employee housing office or, like any other rental you will be evicted.

Other Housing Options Nearby:
South Lake Tahoe is like any other large town with many housing options available. You can choose to live in a condo, house or weekly rental hotel room, all are available in South Lake. Please check out
www.tahoe.com for information about South Lake Tahoe and www.tahoedailytribune.comfor classified listings of rental properties. Century 21 at Tahoe Paradise has a good listing of short and long term rentals in the area, contact them at 530-577-2100 or try Resort Properties at www.lodginglaketahoe.com.

Gardnerville/Minden Nevada, is also close by. A little more quiet and rural than South Lake Tahoe, these towns still offer plenty to do and see. You may find a rental property there at a cheaper price than South Lake Tahoe. Many of our employees live there and enjoy getting away from the snow and the tourists when not at work. Check out  the Reno Gazette Journal on line for leads.
