WINTER TRAILS DAY- Saturday, Jan. 12th Kirkwood Mountain Resort and REI are teaming up to host Winter Trails Day at the Kirkwood Cross Country and Snowshoe Center on Saturday, January 12th with free cross country skiing lessons, free snowshoe demos and REI Outdoor school seminars. Winter Trails Day is a national campaign now in its 13th year designed to expose newcomers to the benefits of cross country skiing and snowshoeing. This one day event is geared towards families, hikers and other recreational enthusiasts as both sports can be enjoyed by participants of all ages and ability levels. FULL MOON SNOWSHOE TREK-(see calendar for dates) Each month there is a guided snowshoe walk under the light of the full moon. There is nothing more special and beautiful than the reflected light of the moon on the snow. Come hoot and howl at the moon with the Kirkwood guides. The pace is slow to moderate as we climb the High Trail ridge for views of the rising moon, the Sierra Crest and the glistening snow. Pre-registration is required, call early as the treks do fill up. Start time: 6:00pm SNOWSHOE SHUFFLE-(see calendar for dates) This is a guided hike providing great views of the High Sierra and a fun day striding on snowshoes. The route will be an enjoyable hike toward the crest of the Sierra Nevada above Kirkwood. The relaxing pace of the hike provides time to enjoy the surrounding area and learn about the history and geology of the Sierras. The hike provides fantastic views of the High Sierra including Round Top Peak looming to the south at 9,842 feet. This invigorating experience is not that difficult and is open to snowshoers of all levels. Start time: Reservations required SKI SKATE CLINIC-(see calendar for dates) Eight time World Master Champion and winner of the Great American Ski Chase Debbi Waldear and staff will conduct this clinic open for beginners to advance participants. Her recent experience working with the US Ski Team coaches gave her the cutting edge on newer, more natural methods of skating. The clinic is about improving on skills and learning the natural more centered way of skating. Skating techniques have been revolutionized in the past few years. Join a clinic to learn all about the transformation of the body position and the use of energy. Start time: 10 am; half day
